Amie-J has been yelling at me to be more current on my posts so here i am. Unfortunately I don't know what to say. JoAnna and I had an awesome conversation at her place about dogmatic morality and perfection. No one on earth can achieve perfection, yet we all try and feel like a failure if we don't. Why is this? It was an awesome conversation and we should have written it down so I could refer to it in my moments of distress! You are awesome and know so much!
It's a simple exercise in philosophical logic. If you "ought" to do something, this necessarily implies that you "can" do it. If you "ought" to be perfect, you "can" be perfect. You can't literally say (or believe) that you "ought" to do something impossible. Thus, we're left struggling. "Be ye therefore perfect...," combined with "...the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them" makes for a pretty tall demand. Although, you know, God DID prepare a way for us to satisfy the commandment to be perfect, and luckily it doesn't require us to be perfect! Hmmm...
Often in life it is the journey that brings the greatest pleasure, not the destination.
We strive for perfection without true hope of achieving that state. The lessons we learn as we strive are our reward.
